Delivering your Message – How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?
Practice, practice, practice! This is the old joke. But you know, the thing is that your message, the things you say to your target audience gets better with it. The more you write to them, the better you get.
This is why you should consistently communicate with your target audience on your list, on your blog, and on your social media.
Practice. And consistency.
So I decided that I was going to do this whole hog, be all in to get my message to say what I mean.
I’ve heard from a lot of people about ‘morning pages’, from the book “The Artists Way” by Julia Cameron. The technique is simple: Just write 750 words every morning. You can do it on paper, or you can do it on 750 Words, a website set up for doing morning pages.
Write randomly, stream of consciousness. No censorship, don’t worry about punctuation, you don’t even have to spell it right! Just write.
750 words.
Every.Single.Day.
This practice is wonderfully freeing. It clears your mind for your day’s work, getting all the crap out and on the sheet (or screen).
It lets you let go and just say whatever you’re thinking.
You’ll see patterns. You’ll see ideas. You may even have a breakthrough.
Try it. Go on, you know you want to!
I am always learning, and believe that I will be learning things right up to my last second alive. And right now, that learning is coming in the form of training for fine-tuning my message with Stella Orange. This woman knows her stuff, and is amazing at helping others to see inside to bring out their best talents and message, to do that fine tuning.
How does she do this? Well, I’m going to sound like a broken record, but she says ‘practice’! Her teaching isn’t just teaching, most of it is actual *writing*. So you spend more time practicing than you do getting taught.
Lets face it, any program that doesn’t make you do the work so you learn how to be better, develop new habits and create movement forward is just words. And how many times have you listened to a great teaching presentation, then went on to do…….nothing! You take great notes, you think, ‘Wow, this is great stuff’, but in the end, you don’t get more clients, make more money or any of that stuff, because the action doesn’t happen.
That is why I love Stella. She *makes* you practice. And you have to turn it in. Like homework. Exactly like homework.
I don’t know about you, but that makes me get off my duff and start *doing* something. And the greatest thing is, these aren’t abstract exercises. These are actual things you need to do with your business, like write your web site front page, or zero in your target market, or create the content for that group program you’ve been thinking about for the last 6 months.
I love her because I believe this is the best way to make things happen. I like to work with my clients the same way (not with copywriting, that is Stella’s game, and she’s *really* good at it), helping them learn, hands on, how to create the structures they need in their business to get moving and make money.
So like I said. Practice. PracticePracticePractice. How else will you get to *your* Carnegie Hall?
